House GOPers Will Hold Private Hearing With Rosenstein In Next Few Weeks

WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 24: U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein leaves after a meeting at the White House September 24, 2018 in Washington, DC. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that Rosenstein will meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday to discuss recent revelations that Rosenstein had talked about secretly recording the president and about invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. House Republican leadership is planning to bring Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in for a private hearing sometime in the new few weeks to discuss the the most recent reports that Rosenstein wanted to secretly record the President, and a slew of other issues it has with the Justice Department, Politico Playbook reported.

Reps. Mark Meadows (NC), John Ratcliffe (TX), Jim Jordan (OH), Trey Gowdy (SC) Bob Goodlatte (VA) and Ken Buck (CO) will question Rosenstein in private to “avoid a public spectacle,” in Politico’s words. If the deputy attorney general doesn’t attend the hearing, he’ll be subpoenaed, sources told Politico.

The report comes just one day after Trump cancelled his planned meeting with Rosenstein, in order to avoid distracting from the hearing for his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who’s accused him of sexual assault. Trump reportedly wants to speak with Rosenstein in person about the reports that he wanted to wiretap him and invoke the 25th Amendment to oust him from office, claims that Rosenstein has flatly denied.

Trump said this week that he would “prefer” to keep Rosenstein around, despite botched reports earlier this week that Rosenstein thought Trump was going to fire him.
