Happy Thursday, May 9. Tensions rose even higher between the administration and Congress this morning as House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) joined the battle, wielding a subpoena of his own for the unredacted Mueller report. Here’s more on that and other stories we’re following.
Three Things To Watch Today
Senate subpoenas Donald Trump Jr.
Reports on Wednesday revealed that the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to Donald Trump Jr. Based on the earliest reactions from Trumpworld (or Trump-adjacent world), Don Jr.’s allies are less than pleased.
Mueller report battle enters next phase
House Democrats escalated their war with the Trump administration on Wednesday with the House Judiciary Committee voting to recommend holding Attorney General Bill Barr in contempt for refusing to let Congress see the unredacted Mueller report. Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said Democrats would move “rapidly” to hold a contempt vote on the House floor, so we’ll be assessing the caucus’ appetite for that move.
Schiff elbows his way into the fight
House Intel Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) issued a subpoena to the DOJ for the unredacted Mueller report and underlying intelligence. He had put out a letter requesting the documents in late April with unusual bedfellow Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), but the Justice Department ignored it. We’ll be watching this fight brewing in yet another House committee.
