Ok, it’s on, I suppose …
It seems that years of Fox News false binaries have created a kind of a universal false binary narrative that everyone, even us vaunted liberals, seem to be unable to avoid using. TPM reader AX is just an example. She tells us that she deeply dislikes his abortion position, but because he’s the only former Vice President in the race, we have to sublimate those concerns (and others) because ‘experience’ and particularly ‘foreign policy’.
This is, frankly, insane.
First, let’s look at Biden’s history and America’s foreign policy over that same time frame. We’re we REALLY so successful? Did we change the world in any beneficial way? Did we end our involvement in unnecessary wars? Did we help bring freedom and democratic governance to the oppressed? Did we really accomplish anything at all, or did we merely slow the foreign policy free-fall nightmare of the Bush/Cheney years?
Second, let’s not pretend this is something it isn’t. In general, foreign policy is EASIER than domestic policy. The Executive branch has more freedom of action, and the questions in play tend to be straightforward. Can anybody REALLY distrust that a Warren or Harris administration would make good decisions, considering the number of advisers and experts available to them?
Look, my opposition to Biden and Sanders isn’t any of this kind of analysis. I just don’t think that old white men who represent the Democratic coalition of 1980 can – or should – lead the 2020 Democratic coalition. Democrats are a party of women, people of color and highly educated whites. We just saw these new coalition politics play out in a very successful 2018 campaign. Biden can be an adviser. He can be an ambassador. He can go home and write a book. But he is NOT by any stretch of the imagination prepared or capable of leading the America we’re living in today.
