Another reader pipes up:
I just read Crazy Over This Impeachment Thing and there is something very disturbing to me about that reader’s outlook.
I am by now quite familiar with seeing things from a completely opposite perspective from Trump supporters, but on this question there also seems to be the same phenomenon with fellow progressives.
In particular, the readers like this one seem to be absolutely certain that a Senate vote to acquit Trump will be a major source of embarrassment to him and the GOP and an “iconic national moment.”
I am completely flabbergasted by this notion.
Trump lives on grievances and victimhood, it is his life’s blood. An impeachment trial in the Senate would give him and his supporters an untold amount of oxygen for that fire. The reader is correct that it would be used again and again in Trump’s campaign ads.
I know everyone wants to get this guy good and quickly, but impeachment isn’t the answer and sometimes we all have to be adults and realize we can’t have our ponies and cake right away. Pelosi is right – I don’t want Trump impeached, I want him in jail.
Trump craves three things – money, power and acceptance. Take away one or more of those things, no matter how long and plodding the process, and you will utterly defeat him.
