Happy Thursday, June 6. While President Donald Trump and his retinue are still bouncing around Europe, both the Democrats and Republicans are trying to put out fires at home. Here are the stories we’re watching today.
Three Things We’re Watching Today:
Pelosi says she wants the President “in prison,” not impeached
At what sounds like a heated meeting of Democratic heavy-hitters, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pushed back at Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler’s (D-NY) request to begin an impeachment inquiry saying that she doesn’t want to see the President impeached, she wants to see him in prison. You can pretty much bet the house that Trump and his favorite news network will have a field day with that one.
Trump jabs Republican senators from across the pond
Trump is bristling at the mild level of newfound defiance from some congressional Republicans who have been speaking out about his Mexico tariffs, scoffing that they have “no idea what they’re talking about.” Some Republicans have been threatening a veto-proof vote to nullify the national emergency declaration, but Trump seems (s0 far) unswayed.
Census hearing was a mixed bag
The judge in Wednesday’s hearing is taking accusations about the added census question seriously — but slowly. TPM’s Matt Shuham covered the lightning-fast session and we’ll be watching the developments from here.
Today’s Rundown
The House and Senate are out.
